Fivefold Reality of Communion

Revere

“So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord.”

1 Corinthians 11:27

We must approach the Lord’s Supper in a WORTHY manner. This is a serious reminder to never approach the table irreverently or with a lack of respect for the One to Whom you are remembering.

Reflect

“Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup.”

1 Corinthians 11:28

As we approach the table reverently, we should become aware of our shortcomings and inability in the light of God’s Majesty.

Repent

“But if we judged ourselves truly, we would not be judged. But when we are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined so that we may not be condemned along with the world.”

1 Corinthians 11:31-32

Any amount of honest reflection upon self, in the light of God’s Glory, will show the necessity of judgment. If we repent, we might commend ourselves to the judgment of God and escape the condemnation of the lost.

Remember

“Do this in remembrance of me.”

1 Corinthians 11:23-26

Continually be reminded of the atoning sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ. Use this Eucharist as a way to repent, worship, commune, and even use it as a means of evangelism.

Rejoice

For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.”

Celebrate the atoning work of our Lord with gratitude. Take joy in the powerful demonstration of the love of God!
